SpiroPlay

SPIRO-metry based PLAY-ful asthma monitoring. Spiroplay is a game that motivates children to conduct valid asthma breathing tests in the comfort of their own homes. The breath test is gamified using co-design based levels, where inhalation, exhalation, and peak flow are visualised in playful ways. The results are analysed by medically validated algorithms can be sent to doctors, while the child receives a simplified version of feedback: 'Good job! Next time, try inhaling for a little bit longer.'

You will need the following:

The software has been preinstalled on tablet HMI-029.

In this step, you will install two APK files onto an Android device. The apps are called “SpiroPlayFrontend” and “SpiroPlayBackend.”

Firstly, connect the PC to the Android Device using a USB cable. A PopUp will appear on the tablet, asking for the USB connection method. Select the Transfer files options.

After launching the app, a few key features can be used.

Select the option to Create a new user profile. This can be done for each player/child. Enter a name, and fill in the FVC and PEF parameters. FVC is the measurement of lung volume and is approximately 6 litres. PEF is for peak flow rate and is usually 8 litres/second.

By pressing the Level Manager Button, you can enter the level manager and lock or unlock levels.

When playing a game, each person should have their own turbine for the NuvoAir, as they are 1 use per person. They can be found in the Interaction Lab storage

In each level, the Inflow (total volume), Outflow (total volume), and Peak Flow are all visually represented. For example, in the Football game, inflow is represented by how far the player draws his foot back. The representations for each game were thought of by children, so they may not always be 100% clear. Playing games is rewarded by gaining coins, which can be used to unlock new levels.

If wanted, the announcer's voice can be changed on the home screen by selecting the “Change voice” button.
